Waste Less: Revolutionizing Recycling
Primary roll: UX designer Time Frame: 72 hours
Meet Waste Less, the innovative mobile app designed to revolutionize recycling. It integrates with smart bins equipped with sensors to detect and classify different types of waste, enabling users to recycle responsibly while earning valuable rewards.
Recycle Rush: Crafting an App in 72 Hours!
The challenge:
Given a 72-hour challenge, I set out to integrate hardware and software to create an app supporting users in their recycling efforts.
Despite the tight deadline, I immersed myself in the task. Drawing from my own experience as a dedicated recycler, I reflected on childhood memories from Colombia. Every Saturday morning, I witnessed street recyclers collecting bottles and papers to be taken to processing plants in exchange for money.
Incorporating personal experiences and memories into the current context of soaring prices, people can benefit from rewards or extra cash when doing recycling efforts. This aligns with the present-day need for sustainable practices that also offer financial incentives.
Unveiling Insights for a Brighter Tomorrow!
A quick survey was sent to family and friends to see what they thought about recycling, gathering their thoughts was essential to be able to come with a great and innovative idea.
Survey results
After analyzing the results we can identify these 3 key points:
1
User Feedback
Users are generally aware of the importance of waste disposal and recycling. They want clear information about how rewards are earned, accumulated, and redeemed. Transparency builds trust and encourages continued engagement with the app
2
Identifying Priorities
Users express difficulty finding nearby recycle stations and understanding their requirements. They appreciate features that make the recycling process easy, such as a user-friendly interface, barcode scanning for quick identification of recyclable items, and proximity-based notifications about nearby recycling centers.
3
Data Analysis
Users are motivated to recycle more frequently when incentivized with rewards such as coupons, discounts, or cash. The promise of tangible benefits encourages users to adopt and maintain recycling habits.
Transforming Challenges into Opportunities!
Lack of Recycling Awareness
Many people are unaware of what can and cannot be recycled, leading to improper disposal.
Contamination Concerns
